Taking the Leap: Long-time editors becoming first-time directors

It has often been said that film editors bring along good prerequisites for entering the field of directing. Because they experience the „naked“ result of the filming process in all its facets in the editing suite and get a clear sense of what works and what does not. And because they spend months exchanging ideas in close quarters with directors of different backgrounds, gaining intimate insight into their methods.

Nevertheless, there is also a whole range of skills and qualities that are expected of directors, but do not necessarily align with widely held preconceptions of editors, for example: Being able to lead and inspire a team, to withstand the enormous pressure of responsibility, and to speak confidently in front of large groups of people.

The three editors on our panel have all achieved their long-format directorial debut in the last five years, and talk about their experiences along the way. For all three, the Corona pandemic also played a role, either as an impulse to shoot or as an additional disruptive factor.

Panel guests:

Renée Edwards (United Kingdom), with excerpts from their documentaries One Note at a Time (2016) and One Note at a Time 2, Katrina to Covid (2021–2022)
Caterina Mona (Switzerland), with excerpts from her feature film Semret (2021–2022)
Pedro Collantes (Spain), with excerpts from his feature film The Art of Return (Original title: El arte de volver, 2020)

Renée Edwards

International Panel

Currently Chair of British Film Editors (BFE), Renée Edwards has been editing for over 30 years. She's worked in all genres, and found her editing mojo in current affairs documentaries, particularly the hour-long investigations.
Renée was born in Leicester to large families originating in Ireland and the Deep South, USA. She studied film at the University of the Arts London.
Although focused mainly on her editing career, Renée has also nurtured her skills as a director and producer. After a few short films she spent over four years filming her long-format debut One Note at a Time (2016), a documentary about musicians in New Orleans and their struggles after Hurricane Katrina. The documentary went on to win several awards, including „Film of the Festival“ at the Oxford International Film Festival 2017.
During the pandemic of 2020/21, Renée directed a 38-minute follow-up, One Note at a Time 2, Katrina to Covid, where she catches up with many of her protagonists – 14 years after she first started filming them.
